For some learners, having to master a new character set while also trying to understand the basics of a new language can be difficult. In order to simplify the new learner's task, we have chosen to present these languages in a transliterated format that is written using the Latin alphabet, as in English. Transliterated texts represent the sounds of the foreign language in a way that is more easily recognizable to the English-speaking learner. Be sure to use the interactive sound features of Languages of the World to hear exactly how native speakers pronounce your chosen language. You can also refer to the Grammar Basics on-line grammar help file for more information on transliteration and your language. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Troubleshooting Tips for Languages of the World Below are solutions to some common situations. See the on-line Help for additional troubleshooting information. 1. CANNOT HEAR SOUND OR SEE ILLUSTRATIONS If you cannot hear sound or see illustrations with Languages of the World, verify that you have the correct CD-ROM in the drive. You must have the Languages of the World CD-ROM marked with the name of the language you are using in the drive to hear sound and see illustrations. If you have the correct CD in the drive but still have this problem, see the on-line Help for other possible solutions. 2. CANNOT SEE EVERYTHING ON THE SCREEN / RESOLUTION TOO LOW If you cannot see everything on the screen when you use Languages of the World, your monitor might be set to a resolution which is too low. Languages of the World requires at least 800x600 resolution. If you try to run it with a lower resolution, such as 640x480, the program will not be displayed properly. To change your resolution on Windows: A. Choose Start / Settings / Control Panel. B. Double-click on the Display control panel icon. C. Click on the Settings tab. D. Move the Screen Area slider to right, until the display resolution under the slider says 800 by 600 pixels or higher. E. Verify that the Colors setting is still set to High Color or True Color. For some monitors, the color setting will change when you change resolutions. F. Click OK to close the control panel. G. Click OK if you are asked to confirm the new settings. H. After the new settings are in place, restart Languages of the World. To change your resolution on Macintosh: A. Select /Control Panels/Monitors & Sound. B. Click Monitor. C. In the Resolution box, select 823 x 624, 75Hz or a Higher resolution. D. Close the control panel. E. Restart Languages of the World. 3. ERROR IN THE SOUND SYSTEM On Windows, the error message "There was an Error in the Sound System..." during recording is caused by a conflict in the memory area of the computer. When you record your own voice Windows 95 or 98 saves the recording as a sound file in a temporary area of memory. When this memory area becomes full Windows 95 or 98 shutsdown the recording utility to protect other programs that might be using that area of memory. To free up more memory, disable any other programs that are running at the same time as Languages of the World and / or delete all temporary data files on the computer. To delete Temporary Files A. Click Start / Find / Files or Folders. B. In the named box type: *.TMP C. In the Look In: box make sure it has your Hard Drive (C:) listed. D. Click Find Now. E. When the search is finished, go to the Edit Menu And choose Select All. F. Go to the File menu and select Delete. This action will delete all of the temporary files on your Hard Drive. To close programs running in the background: A. Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE once. B. A Close Program window will appear. There are two programs essential to Windows: Explorer and Systray. You can close all of the other programs listed there by highlighting them and clicking the End Task button. C. You will have to re-open the Close Program window each time by pressing the CTRL + ALT + DELETE keys. After following this procedure, your computer should have enough memory to run Languages of the World! without error. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ THANK YOU FROM ALL OF US AT TRANSPARENT LANGUAGE, INC.!
